Labor Day Recipes: Sweet and Spicy

Posted on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 at 10:55 pm.

No matter what your Labor Day plans are, there are a few things most of us will be enjoying – no work and great food. Whether you’re planning a cookout or a get-together, the following recipes can enhance your day and fill your tummy!

Peanut Butter Chewy Bars

  • 1 Box Corn Flakes
  • 1 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Karo Syrup
  • 1/4 Cup Butter or Margarine

In a medium sauce pan over med-high heat, place peanut butter, sugar, butter, and karo syrup. Stir constantly until mixture is melted and smooth. Continue to cook (mixture will bubble slowly) for about 5 minutes. In a large bowl, add the mixture and cups of corn flakes until the mixture is stiff and all the corn flakes are coated. You’ll end up using about 3/4 of the box of cereal. Spread the mixture into a greased pan and refrigerate for 1 hour. Cut into squares to serve.

Loaded Burgers

  • 1 lb Ground Beef (makes 5 to 6 burgers)
  • Finely diced onions (about 1/2 cup)
  • 1/2 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 Egg
  • Hawaiian Soft Rolls

Mix ground beef, onions, grated cheese, and egg in a large bowl. Add salt and pepper, and mix all ingredients together. Divide mixture and form into decent-sized burger patties. These can be cooked on the grill or in the pan – whatever you prefer. While cooking burgers, toast Hawaiian soft rolls. These burgers are great with slices of swiss cheese and mushrooms. Serves 5 to 6 people.

Chilled Lemonade Punch Ice

  • Large bowl with lid
  • 1 Quart Country Time Lemonade – mixed
  • 1 Cup Orange Juice
  • 1 Cup Cranberry Juice
  • 1 Cup Apple Juice

Mix all drinks together in bowl. Add sliced fruit if you prefer. There should be 1 to 2 inches from mixture to top of bowl for expansion. Freeze overnight and then use an icepick to chip into glasses.

Benefits of Eco-Friendly and Handmade Gifts and Products

Posted on Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 at 3:24 am.

You’ve probably heard the term ‘going green’ from just about every company featured in a television commercial or online ad. But have you stopped to think about how eco-friendly products can affect you? What about handmade products? Is it better to purchase something from an individual who put a lot of time and love into it, or are mass-produced items just fine? Below, we’ll take a quick look at the benefits of eco-friendly and handmade gifts and products.

Reducing Waste

When you buy something that is recycled or ‘upcycled,’ you’re preventing landfills from being packed with things that are still perfectly usable. A few great examples of items that fit into this category might include coin purses made from recycled fabric and bracelets made from recycled glass bottles. Some of the biggest celebrities can be found wearing upcycled or eco-friendly goods, including Kristen Stewart (pop tab bracelet, vintage clothing, etc).

Another great way of reducing waste is by carrying fabric tote bags or field bags instead of plastic bags. Those nifty plastic bags you get from the grocery store are being thrown away by the millions – and end up right in our landfills. The ones that make their way into lakes, rivers, and oceans are responsible for a massive amount of sea life deaths from entanglement and strangulation. With the purchase of one or two tote bags, you can do your part to keep this from happening.

Other products that allow you to reduce waste include reusable water bottles that reduce the need for plastic disposable water bottles.  Also, reusable dishes are a great idea as well. With the cute ones available at Girlz Lyfe, you can make it about style as well!

Supporting Small Businesses

Not only are handmade gifts more special, but when you purchase handmade gifts and products, you support small businesses. Whether it’s a woman in Vermont who lovingly creates beaded bracelets or a family in Florida who stitches some of the cutest plushies in the world – you’re doing your part to support small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our country, and when you support them, you provide hard-working fellow Americans the means to support their families.  That same money that you used to purchase beautiful handmade items will likely go back into our country, helping the economy.

In summary, you don’t have to knock your house down and start from the ground up to ‘go green.’ It can be as simple as purchasing handmade products or eco-friendly products when you get ready to shop. Girlz Lyfe is proud to feature some of the cutest handmade and eco-friendly products around – and we appreciate YOUR business!

How to Choose the Perfect Hairstyle for Your Face Shape

Posted on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 at 4:31 am.

Are you considering changing up your look; maybe getting a new hairstyle? Well, before you grab a photo of your favorite celeb and head to the salon, read this! You can really make an impact if you choose a hairstyle that suits the shape of your face.

Heart-Shaped Face – If you have that adorable heart-shaped face (wider at the temples and slimmer near the chin), you can pull off some really cute hair cuts. Bobs look really cute on you, because the short hair near the chin evens out your face.

Layered hair with layers near the chin also look really great. Long, straight hair can look okay, but won’t really do anything extra for you. A few celebrities with heart-shaped faces include Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes, and Jennifer Lopez.

Round Face – If you’ve got those cheeks that beg to be pinched, there are some great hairstyles that are perfect for you. Your goal should be to minimize the roundness, and one fantastic way to do this is with longer, straight hair.

When your tresses are close to your face on the sides, it will downplay some of the roundness of your cheeks. Hair that has height near the crown is also good – so volume on top of your head with longer tresses is a definite win. Celebs with round faces include Kirsten Dunst, Kelly Clarkson, and Mandy Moore.

Long, Thin Face – If your face is longer than it is wide, or rectangular in shape, you may be wondering what hairstyle will compliment you. To balance out the length, choose a hairstyle that is fuller at the sides.

Layers are perfect, especially if there is volume in them. Wispy bangs look great with this face shape, and side-parts as well. A few stars with this face shape include Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashley Tisdale, and Beyonce.

Triangular Face – This face shape is thinner near the temples and fuller at the jaw line. To balance this out, choose hairstyles that are fuller up top. Short hair with flirty layers can look great with this face shape.

Don’t choose styles that are flat to the head near the top and fuller near the chin, as it will make the face look even more triangular. You share a face shape with Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock, and Fantasia Barrino.

Not-So-Perfect-Parts – Many women have little issues that they can’t get over. For instance, maybe you think you have a very prominent forehead. To minimize this, get bangs cut and style them so that they sweep to the side. This balances out the look and can help you feel more confident.

If you’re afraid that your nose is a little too large, don’t go all Hollywood and get a new one. Just focus on hairstyles that are fuller on the sides, as this downplays larger features. Makeup is also a great way to place emphasis on other parts of the face to downplay certain features. Embrace the beautiful you with a perfect hairstyle for your face shape!

Don’t Stress It: 5 Ways to Reduce Hair Damage

Posted on Friday, August 27th, 2010 at 6:42 pm.

Everyone wants beautiful, silky hair – whether it’s short, long, or somewhere in between. According to some experts, the beauty of your hair will directly reflect the way you’re treating it. Using the 5 tips below, baby your hair and reduce the damage so you can enjoy silky, beautiful locks.

1. Limit the Coloring - Bleaching and coloring your hair does major damage. In fact, hair that has been completely saturated with chemicals over and over in the coloring process can quite literally crumble between your fingertips. Coloring should be limited as much as possible. If your roots start showing, just have those touched up rather than re-coloring all of your hair to reduce the damage. Experts say to wait 6 weeks between colorings, but if you can stretch it further than that, even better!

2. Take Your Vitamins – Niacin, Biotin, Panthenol, and other types of Vitamin B are excellent for the hair. They promote growth and health, so you can watch your hair go from dull to gleaming. These vitamins are found in fish, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, turkey, and numerous other sources. If you’re not getting enough of these vitamins through your diet, you can take a supplement. However, most experts agree that vitamins derived from food sources are better than supplements.

3. Use Natural Shampoo – Visit your local health food or natural food store and purchase some all-natural, organic shampoo. Many of the kinds of shampoo you can pick up in the drug store are completely loaded with chemicals. When you rub these on your head every single day…well, you get the picture. Find an all-natural shampoo that cleanses and nourishes your hair.

4. Avoid Cotton Pillowcases – A lot of people don’t know that cotton (or other harsher fabrics) pillowcases are bad for the hair. As you toss and turn and move in your sleep, the hair rubs against the pillowcase and breaks, splits, and sustains trauma. Reduce this significantly by changing your pillowcase to a softer, slicker material like satin.

5. Avoid Terry Cloth Towels – Your standard towel is going to be bad for the hair, especially if you do that “roll your hair up in the towel” thing. It’s the same principle as the pillowcase, and it’s damaging. Use a microfiber towel that is softer and more gentle on your hair. Of course, minimize the heat you use on your hair as well (straightener, blow-dryer).

That’s it. Using the above tips, you can nourish your hair back to health!

Bonus: Quick Healthy Hair Treatment

Use 1/2 cup olive oil and heat for about 20 seconds in the microwave. Saturate your hair with this and allow it to sit for 2-3 hours as you go about your other chores.  Then, wash with an all-natural shampoo. The olive oil provides moisture and vitamins, making the hair look healthier and more beautiful!
