How to Dress for a Job Interview

Posted on Friday, October 8th, 2010 at 7:22 pm.

If you’re scheduled for an interview (or some other type of stressful meeting) soon but you’re just not sure what to wear, this is the post for you. It can be nerve-wracking to worry about what you’re going to say - settling on a great outfit can reduce your stress about the way you look. Below are some great tips for dressing for a job interview.

If the dress code is business-casual:

Business casual means you can dress comfortably, but you should still put forth the effort to look polished and smart. A few things that work very well are dark slacks and skirts. For skirts, think below the knee or calf-length. Tops can be a bit more expressive, and it is important to let a little of your own personality shine through. Just avoid anything obnoxious or obtrusive. Think small patterns, muted colors, and modest styles.

For business-formal requirements, you’re getting in a suit! The most popular kinds of ‘job interview’ suits for men are dark – dark gray, blue, etc. Shirts should contrast well, so light blues, whites, or cream colors work well. Choose a tie that matches the suit (a darker color looks better against the lighter shirt.)

For women, a skirt suit or pants suit will do fine, and the colors that are popular for men work well here too. With more options for women, you can feel free to change it up a bit as long as the overall look is still intelligent and polished. For example, a sage green skirt suit with a cream-colored shirt, stockings, and heels would work well.

Other Tips for Dressing for a Job Interview:

  • Jewelry is fine, as long as it’s simple and non-obtrusive. For instance, you might want to take out your face piercings, but a colorful necklace that matches your ensemble would work well.
  • Bring an extra shirt and pair of stockings (if you’re a woman) in case of an emergency. This way, if you spill coffee on your shirt just before the interview or tear a hole in your stockings, you’re not left to freak out wondering what to do about it!
  • Make sure your hair (girl or guy) is properly groomed and looks nice.
  • Finally, don’t forget to give yourself a quick check (teeth, too!) just before you go into the interview.

Renesmee Chosen: Mackenzie Foy Will Play the Daughter of Edward and Bella

Posted on Thursday, October 7th, 2010 at 9:45 pm.

Twilight fans have been waiting a long time to find out how Renesmee will be portrayed in Breaking Dawn.  In the story, Renesmee ages rapidly, so it will be a challenge for the directors to recreate the book. However, it’s being said that they will employ similar techniques to the ones used in ‘The Curious Tale of Benjamin Button,’ and perhaps younger actors in certain scenes.

Regardless of how they will pull off the effects, 9 year-old Mackenzie is adorable and certainly looks like a combination of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson). With hair slightly darker than mouse-brown, and huge green eyes, she’s really a great looking kid.

Also reported is that Maggie Grace will play Irina – the woman who reports Renesmee’s existence to the Volturi and begins the series of events that lead to the eventual fight in Breaking Dawn.

Here are a few things I think it will be interesting to see in Breaking Dawn, which has been cut into two parts and will be released November 18, 2011 and November 16, 2012:

- How the director will portray the baby version of Renesmee.

- The birth scene. If you haven’t read the Twilight books, Renesmee is brought into the world in a truly unique way after she breaks Bella’s spine – and by unique, I mean Edward uses his teeth. Nice.

- How the director will portray the magic in the battle at the end. With Bella’s invisible ’shield,’ and the other magics being used, it will certainly call for some camera and effect trickery to get the point across to audiences.

So, what do you think about the actress cast as Renesmee? Are you happy with the choice, and what are you most looking forward to seeing?

Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Defining Jewelry and Accessories

Posted on Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 at 12:26 pm.

What is your ’strongest’ piece of jewelry? By this I mean do you have any pieces that are wild, colorful, bold, striking…pieces that stand alone? Many people shy away from this kind of jewelry, but if used correctly, it can be a girl’s best friend. Bold accessories can instantly dress up a bland outfit and create a polished, intriguing look.

Jeans and a T-shirt – Let’s start with the classic look first. What can you do to make regular jeans and a t-shirt or blouse really look great?

The Zad Leopard Ring will draw attention and add a great amount of interest and beauty to your look.

The Victorian Cuff Bracelet will instantly make your look a little dressier. Add a pair of high heels and you’re good to go!

Add the Natural Beauty Necklace and a  blazer in earth tones, and you instantly look fabulous.

Slacks/Skirt Suits/Pant Suits – Maybe you’re getting ready for work and you realize that your look is totally without spice. Skirt or pant suits can often appear bland because of the monotonous colors. There are a few great ways to dress up this kind of ensemble.

Instantly add a pop of color to your outfit with these beautiful Peacock Feather Dangle Earrings. These babies are so hot they were featured in Glamour Magazine!

The Pansy Collage Belt Buckle can bring warmth and color to any seemingly boring outfit.

With the Twin Pocket Purse, you have a beautiful, bold accessory that is also functional.

It’s that easy to use defining jewelry and accessories to add color, interest, and intrigue to your look. Tell us some of your favorite defining jewelry in the comments below, and thanks to Yona for the idea for this post!

BOO: Unique Halloween Costume Ideas from Girlz Lyfe

Posted on Friday, October 1st, 2010 at 10:17 pm.

This year, you’re likely to see quite a few vampires and werewolves, a lot of Lady Gagas, and maybe even ‘Kick-Ass Style’ superheroes. Whether you’re trekking miles with your children to collect as much sugar as possible, or you’re attending a Halloween or Samhain party, why not dress up in a truly unique costume? Below are some really great ideas…

Favorite Book Character

Do you have a favorite book that you wish others would read? Why not dress up as a character from the book? One of my personal favorite books is ‘The Mists of Avalon,‘ which I believe is the most fantastic re-telling of the King Arthur stories…EVER. My favorite character from the book is Morgaine (Morgan le Fay), so that would be a perfect idea.

Chances are, no one else will be dressing like her on my block! A few other book character ideas: Sookie Stackhouse, Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games, Bertha Mason from Jane Eyre (read it!), Cathy’s ghost from Wuthering Heights. Or, go with your favorite author – how about Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Stephen King?

Go As Yourself

Why not poke a little fun at yourself and pull out those old yearbooks and photo albums? Dress up as yourself from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s. From penny loafers to bell-bottom jeans to hair that defies gravity – this is a fun Halloween idea. If you’d rather not dress as yourself, dress as a famous icon from a particular era. A few ideas spring to mind – Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Stevie Nicks…let your creativity out!

Pair and Group Costume Ideas

If you’re going to a Halloween party with a group, your spouse, or someone special, why not come up with a super-cute pair or group costume idea? If there are three of you, get some ears, tails, and sunglasses to become the Three Blind Mice. Other group ideas include bands and television show casts. You and your sweetheart could dress up as Hansel and Gretel, Sonny and Cher, salt and pepper, a wall outlet and plug…you get the idea!

Funny Costume Ideas

If you’re going to a Halloween party, dress up as the host of the party for a few great laughs! Another great idea is to dress up as an American Idol contestant, and each time you ring a door bell, sing ‘trick or treat’ in a particularly horrid way. Younger guys can dress up as Fred from Youtube, sporting the annoying voice and rambling on about the neighborhood squirrels and Judy. Other funny costume ideas include a lame excuse (excuses safety pinned to your clothing), the Shamwow! guy, or your favorite comedian.

What are your favorite Halloween costume ideas? What’s the weirdest one you’ve ever seen? I once saw someone dressed as a tornado for Halloween…which I thought was pretty strange. Leave your comments below and share funny Halloween stories.

Cute Baby and Toddler Gift Ideas from Girlz Lyfe

Posted on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 at 1:45 pm.

There’s nothing more fun than dressing your baby or toddler in adorable clothing, or making sure they have the cutest school supplies. Girlz Lyfe has the cutest baby and toddler items, and is a great source for baby and toddler gifts when you want your present to stand out from the rest at a birthday party or family event. Check out the gift ideas below for help when you need something seriously cute and affordable.

Baby and Toddler Clothing

One of the best things you can buy for little kids is clothing. Because these little humans seem to go through clothing as fast as the rest of us go through oxygen, parents who receive clothing for their kids are eternally grateful. Also, there’s a rule when it comes to purchasing baby and toddler clothing and that is ‘the cuter, the better.’ Girlz Lyfe has clothing as small as 6-12 months like the Kangaroo Drama Infant Body Suit. Also, t-shirts and hoodies are available for older kids in sizes 2T, 3T, 4T, and larger. Check out the I’m a VIP t-shirt – super cute. Whether you’re shopping for your little one or need a great gift, you can’t beat clothing.

Around the House

Kids love things that are cute – and that includes things that they use around the house on a daily basis. For instance, eating with utensils that are part robot (Chow Bots Utensils) is so much cooler than an ordinary fork and spoon. Or, being able to create hair with mashed potatoes and a beard with gravy on the Food Face Dinner Plate will make lunch time hilarious. Simple items that turn every day activities into something fun are great items for any child. While you’re looking for items that work well around the house, check out items that can make an accident easier to get through like the themed bandages.

Gifts for School-Aged Children

If you want to make school more fun for your child or a child you love, consider giving them something stylish and quirky. For instance, you can make lunch time more fun with one of the themed lunchboxes from Girlz Lyfe. Just a few of the available ones include the sandwich lunch box, Hello Kitty lunch boxes, and even Barbie lunch boxes. From bags to hoodies to paperclips – Girlz Lyfe has a ton of back-to-school items that would make great gifts for school-aged children.

No matter what kind of baby and toddler gift you’re looking for, you can find something great at Girlz Lyfe. Let us know what your favorite is!

3 Ways to Care for Your Skin in Winter

Posted on Saturday, September 25th, 2010 at 4:48 pm.

While it’s still pretty warm in some areas, there’s no doubt that autumn is in the air! Soon, we’ll be battling chilly winds and with that, dry skin and other skin problems. Dry skin can become chapped, uncomfortable and itchy. Below, you’ll find 3 great ways to care for your skin in winter and maintain supple moisture and health.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter is one of the best things you can use on your skin. The first thing you should know about Shea Butter is that you want to purchase the raw, unrefined Shea Butter. You never want to get the processed kind because all of the wonderful vitamins and minerals have been stripped from it. Shea Butter is solid at room temperature but melts with the warmth of the body. It can be rubbed on easily, or placed in a warm bath for you to soak in. This butter is packed full of vitamins for your skin, and can keep it moisturized during the cool winter months.

Exfoliate

Exfoliate your skin at least once every few weeks during the winter. This removes the dry skin flakes that can make your skin appear dull and unhealthy. Any kind of sugar scrub is perfect to use, and you can use it right in the shower. After exfoliating, be sure to moisturize your skin to avoid more dry skin issues! Exfoliating can help your skin keep a healthy, beautiful glow.

Water

One of the most important things you can do for your skin is drink water. Water maintains the body’s organs, and without water, the organs cannot function. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and without enough water, all kinds of problems can be realized. From acne and blemishes to dry skin to wrinkles – these are the things you might have to deal with if you don’t get enough water. Drink 8 glasses of water a day. To make it more palatable, add a lemon or lime slice and a bit of honey!

Taking care of your skin will earn big rewards for you – healthier looking skin, younger looking skin, and more beautiful skin. Using the tips above will keep your skin beautiful and supple during the winter.
