Girlz Lyfe Has Fashionable Compasses!

Posted on Friday, May 27th, 2011 at 1:21 am.

The magnetic compass is an old Chinese invention, probably first made in China during the Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.). Chinese fortune tellers used lodestones (a mineral composed of an iron oxide which aligns itself in a north-south direction) to construct their fortune telling boards. Eventually some really intelligent person noticed that the lodestones were better at pointing out real directions, leading to the first compasses. They designed the compass on a square slab which had markings for the cardinal points and the constellations. The pointing needle was a lodestone spoon-shaped device, with a handle that would always point south. Now that you know the story about compasses, check out the amazing collection of fashionable compasses Girlz Lyfe has to offer.

Book Review: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Posted on Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 at 3:48 pm.

*If you haven’t read the first three books in this series, you probably don’t want to read this review. Those first three books are City of Bones, City of Glass, and City of Ashes.

I loved the first three books in this series, so I had CoFA ordered long before it was released. We start with Simon’s point of view as a couple of ’servants’ find him and let him know that his presence is required with their master. Their master turns out to be none other than the vampire Camille, the most powerful vampire of the area. She offers him the chance to work with her, to regain her power and become powerful himself.

Simon is given a length of time to think about it. At the same time, he’s trying to figure out what to do because he’s ‘dating’ both Isabelle and Maia at the same time. Bad Simon! In the meantime, Jace and Clary seem to be having troubles of their own. For no apparent reason, Jace has become distant and Clary starts to wonder whether she was imagining the greatness of their love in the beginning. However, the reader sees that Jace is having horrible nightmares, and is most likely staying away from Clary because these nightmares involve him hurting or killing her. He wonders if there is something of his father in him left, something evil.

Turns out, someone is causing problems for Jace and it’s not someone we’ve met in the previous books before, but there’s a pretty good reason for it. In fact, the same person is causing a lot of problems with Simon as well. Don’t forget, if you’ve read the previous books you know Simon has the mark of Cain so this comes in to play in the book. We also meet Kyle, who is not really Kyle, but Jarrod, the boy that turned Maia into a werewolf.

This book was thrilling and I loved every minute of it. There are more lovey dovey scenes between Jace and Clary in this one than in any of the others (yay!) and we get insight into some of the characters that we hadn’t had before. For instance, we find out why Isabelle isn’t willing to give up her heart when her brothers so willingly do. Alec and Magnus come back for a specific reason in the book and we get to see the closeness between those two, which is adorable!

Overall, although I think the series would have been wrapped up nicely with the third book, I loved this one. In fact, I love the characters so much that I will probably read if Cassandra Clare writes 30 more books involving these characters. One little thing I didn’t like: I hated the end. It was a cliffhanger end that’s enough to drive me NUTS, and I hate cliffhanger ends. The reason: I feel like it’s a cheap ploy to get readers to buy the next book. “That’s what they’re supposed to do,” you might say, but the truth is Cassandra Clare’s fan base is so huge that she doesn’t need these cheap cliffhangers. Anyway, the book was fantastic – FIVE out of FIVE stars!
